2008 PSWGA Amateur Championships

FINAL RESULTS - 2008 PSWGA CHAMPIONSHIPS  Brittany Benvenuto capped off a solid week of golf to not only claim medalist honors in the Amateur division, but take home the championship trophy as well.

The Arizona Wildcat lefty junior won her first round match over Avi Hockfield, 3 and 2 on Tuesday. Wednesday's match with Courtney Myhrum stretched out to the 20th hole before Benvenuto advanced to meet Carol Semple Thompson, who holds more State Amateur titles than Brittany is old. The match with Semple Thompson concluded with a 4 and 3 win, setting up the final match on Friday with Ali Bode.

Benvenuto's strong play continued into the final match. The thirteenth hole turned out to be her lucky one, as she closed out Bode with a 6 and 5 win.

Ali Bode, playing for Harvard University, is our 2008 Amateur Runner-Up.  Bode won matches over Laura Ladden, 2 and 1; Alyssa Roland by a 5 and 4 decision, and advanced to the finals after finally prevailing over Aurora Kan by a 2 and 1 margin.

In the Senior Championship, Noreen Mohler displayed great shotmaking to win her first PSWGA Senior title over Barbara Pagana, 7 and 6.  Mohler entered the finals after defeating Kristin Armstrong in the first round, 8 and 7; second round results of 2 and 1 over Sue Colter setup a semi-final match with Connie Shorb. The Shorb-Mohler match saw Mohler needing an extra hole to retire the eight-time Senior champion from the tournament and advance to the final match against Barbara Pagana.

Barbara Pagana, our 2008 Senior Championship Runner-Up, played solidly all week until the final match, where she fell to Mohler after a rough round.  Pagana beat Pattie Parsons 4 and 3 in the first round, and with a second round win over the defending champion Terry Harbaugh advanced to mee Liz Haines in the third match.  The Haines-Pagana match finshed with Pagana and a 1 Up win, and Friday's match with the steady Mohler resulted in her Runner-Up finish in the Senior Division.

The Super Senior Championship yielded the only successful title defense of the Championships.  Maisie Barlow repeats as our 2008 Super Senior Champion with a final match win over former Super Senior champion Gail Brown, 6 and 4.  Barlow entered the finals after defeating Neva Cutler, 4 and 3 in the first round. The second round saw a 5 and 3 win over Judy Wolstenholme, and the match with Gail Brown ending in a 6 and 4 triumph. "I played well today" Barlow said. "I knew I couldn't give Gail an inch because she's so good. I needed to capitalize on any mistakes and managed to do so" Barlow said.
