2008 PSWGA Amateur Championships

DAY FOUR 11:05am  Thursday's matches are underway, and the remaining defending champion from 2007 has won her second straight Super Senior title.  Maisie Barlow displayed some solid putting throughout her match with former Super Senior champion Gail Brown this morning, closing out her opponent on the 14th green for a 5 and 4 victory.  "I played well today" Barlow said. "I knew I couldn't give Gail an inch because she's so good. I needed to capitalize on any mistakes and managed to do so."   Congratulations to both players on a great tournament.

In the Amateur division, Aurora Kan gave Ali Bode all she could handle before falling to Bode 2 and 1 after Kan's tee shot on the par-3 No. 17 sailed long into the woods beyond the green. After hitting a provisional shot to three feet, Kan had to wait to see her fate as Bode was lying 30 plus feet away on the green.   Bode's first putt ran 8 feet by the cup, and the return effort slid past to three feet.   A final putt for four sealed the match for Bode, as Kan drained her putt for a four to halve the hole.  Bode prevails to advance to the Amateur Championship finals by a 2 and 1 margin.

In the lower bracket, the youth movement continued as Amateur medalist Brittany Benvenuto advances with a 4 and 3 win over Carol Semple-Thompson today.   The Amateur Championship finals will begin tomorrow at 8:00am.

On No. 11, Barbara Pagana hit a 6 rescue club up the right side and watched the ball roll up on the green. After looking for the ball with any luck, Liz Haines suggested looking in the cup. Say hello to an eagle two and advance to the next hole....great eagle, Barb! Pagana won over Liz Haines, 3 and 2 to advance to the Senior finals against Noreen Mohler.   Mohler gains entry in to the Senior finals by defeating Connie Shorb on the 19th hole of the match. Mohler birdied the 18th to force extra holes for the win. Huntsville welcomes spectators to this Championship event - first match tees off at 8:00am. DAY THREE  The second round of match play at the 2008 Amateur Championships is complete, and what a day.

In the Senior Division, our 2007 Senior champion Terry Harbaugh's bid for a repeat fell short courtesy of a 1 Up victory by Barbara Pagana. Liz Haines comes to the semi-finals with a 4 and 3 decision over AK Frasier. In the lower bracket, Connie Shorb prevailed over Bonnie George by a 4 and 3 final, and Shorb will have a rematch with Noreen Mohler (they last met at Oakmont 2007) in the semi's after Mohler won over Sue Colton, 2 and 1.

The story of the day comes in the form of a petite 14-year old taking on the defending Amateur champion, playing to the 18th hole before the champion's bid ended with a missed putt from 40 feet. Aurora Kan prevails over Katie Miller, 1 Up on the 18th hole.

After losing the first three holes of the match to the stronger Miller, Kan halved the fourth hole when both players made bogey. The fifth hole saw great approach shots equate into birdies for each player, and with a conceded putt on the sixth hole saw Kan in a four hole deficit.

The long par four on the seventh hole was bogied by Miller from a greenside bunker, with Kan making par - three holes down. The eigth, ninth and tenth holes were halved. The momentum started a turn for Kan when she chipped in from the rough/fringe to win the eleventh hole. A bogey from the defending champ on the thirteenth hole shaved the lead to one hole. After a pair of pars on fourteen, Kan birdied the fifteenth to take the lead for the first time in the match. Number sixteen was halved, and after a lipped putt by Kan for par, Miller sinks her par putt to bring the match to All Square going into the final hole.

Kan said that her drives had been good all day, and coming into eighteen she just wanted to stay middle right in the fairway. "For some reason, the last thought in my head before I made my swing was 'don't go left'. And aw, jeeze, what happened? It went left into the woods."

Miller's tee shot off eighteen found the woods on the right side of the fairway, and despite all attempts to find it, Miller had to declare a lost ball and return to the tee, now hitting three.

Kan, in the meantime, is evaluating how to escape from her situation deep in Penn's Woods. With her ball sitting on a patch of moss, she sees an opening to punch through back to the fairway. Taking a 6-iron, she catches it clean and punches to the right side of the fairway. After a wedge shot was left short of the green, Kan chips to about 8 feet while Miller is lying 35 feet short of the hole after her approach.

Miller's attempt at that long putt nearly succeeded, with the putt just sliding by to a few feet away.

Kan thought to herself that 'I made a putt to win yesterday, I will make this putt now...', and proceeded to stroke it into the cup. Miller picked up her marker and started toward Kan, and that's when it hit her - "Oh my God, did I just win???"

Yes, she did, and will now face Alison Bode in the morning. If anyone wants to watch some great amateur golf, Huntsville is the place to be tomorrow morning...

2008 PSWGA Junior Girls' Championship - Final Results

If anyone believes junior golf isn't competitive, they are mistaken. The only two players to shoot all three rounds in the 70's needed an extra hole to settle the quest for the 2008 Junior Girls' title. Jacqueline Calamaro of Rolling Green and Christine Shimel of Hartefeld National Golf Club finished regulation play at 228 - and it was Calamaro who emerged the champion after the first playoff hole. Emily Riddle finished in third, five shots back at 233. Our medalist, Samantha Arena, struggled a bit with a closing 84 to finish fourth.
